What to Expect from Your Puppy or Kittens First Exam

Congratulations on your new puppy or kitten! With luck, you will be able to share life and love with your new pet for many years to come. Start that journey off on the right foot with a wellness exam. Oak Grove Veterinary Hospital in San Jose, CA, explains what to expect for your first puppy or kitten wellness exam.

This May Not Be the First Visit

Shelters give all pets a vet check before putting them up for adoption, even very young puppies and kittens. Responsible breeders will bring the mother and babies in for a check-up when they are days old. Even if your visit to the vet may not technically be your pet’s first vet visit, it is the first vet visit with you, which makes it important.

Make Sure Your Pet Is Confined

Your pet may seem like a little furry angel now, but he can get frightened easily. For the safety of your pet and the other pets that may be in the waiting room, please keep your pets in a carrier or on a leash.

What to Bring

Besides your pet, you should bring any medical records from the shelter or breeder, a stool sample, and any puppy and kitten care questions you have.

What Happens at the Exam

Your pet is weighed and then given a hands-on check-up. This involves checking vital signs, eyes, ears, teeth, nose, paws, genitals, under the tail, and fur. Your pet may have his temperature taken. Our veterinarian will gently feel your pet’s body for any abnormalities. The exam only takes about ten minutes or less. Getting a bouncy puppy or kitten to stay on the scale long enough to be weighed may take longer. A blood sample is taken for testing. Your pet will be given a round of vaccinations.
