How to Help a Pet After a Surgery

How to Help a Pet After a Surgery

Dr. Keith L. Parendo and the rest of the staff at St. Francis Hospital for Animals in Oakdale, NY, understands what a stressful event any pet surgery can be. The post-operation phase is often the most stressful because people are afraid they may do something that will cause harm to their beloved pet. Our staff tries to make this time easier by providing specific instructions for your pet's care, including what to look for that might require a visit to our office.

Common Post-Operation Care

In most cases, you will be asked to leave your pet in our hands until after the surgery is finished. You will receive a call telling you when we are finished and letting you know how your pet is doing. Many people want to see their pet immediately but it might be better to wait until your pet has fully awakened. Once your pet has been cleared to return home, you will be given specific instructions on how to care for any incisions. You may be given some medication to help reduce any pain if it is expected. The next thing you will be instructed on is what signs you should watch for that might indicate an infection and what instances might require immediate action. In the majority of cases, none of this will be needed but it’s good to know just in case. Next, you will be scheduled for a follow-up visit so our vet can check on the continued healing. Before you leave with your pet, we encourage you to ask any questions you may have.
